vacation

I love this place.  I love our neighbors. I love the beach. It makes retirement look all kinds of appealing.

Here we are, practicing for retirement.

Samson will still need a job. Chasing Chuck-it is a good one.

A dog's life

A friend of mine posted a video of a dog relinquished to the Humane Society, a 10 year old beagle.   My heart broke watching the video.  The caption included this - the family no longer had time for her.

Wow.  After 10 years.  Just how much time does a 10 year old dog take?

It's hard not to be critical, a little big angry, and a whole lot disgusted.  After 10 years.  Animals aren't disposable.  They aren't convenient until inconvenient.  They aren't garbage you throw out when you don't want him or her any more.

10 years.

--------------

We are here enjoying heaven on earth.  Our little man loves the beach.

Someone threw him away too.  Left him in a park in downtown Grand Rapids.  Until he made his way to us almost six years ago.

While despicable, the person or people who disposed of Samson gave us the most amazing gift.  Yup he was work.  But he has rewarded us in ways that we could have never imagined.

As our vet tech said to Samson the first time we took him to our vet, "Samson, you have hit the mother lode!"  I hope the same kind of home is in store with this sweet beagle.

Cheers from East of the Equator.

Conflict and resolution

It gets a little crazy on the beach.  We have lots of dogs, lots of people, lots of traffic, and well, lots of time to play. Samson loves to play. He will share his beach, his deck, and his water. But ... Samson is VERY protective of his toys.

In this exchange, Bella approaches slowly.

Samson, not to be fooled, makes a move. Don't even think about taking my ball, he says.

It's how conflict get resolved on the beach.

We should take a lesson from this.  Cheers from the beach!

Garage sale

We had a garage sale on Saturday.  I have never had one before.  With the basement project almost complete, it was time to downsize some of our belongings.   I advertised on fb and Craigslist, having no idea what to expect.  Here is the kicker.  We thought that the things that would be go fast, didn't.  We thought the things that would never sell, went first.

There are a few delightful stories from the event.

I met a new, temporary neighbor, an international scholar, who needs to come see me immediately for immigration stuff.  #HR

Several of my friends stopped by to meet Mr. Handsome.  All remarked how big he is. :)And what a snuggle muffin.  And the irony that we call him little man.   #Doglove

A young man stopped by to look at our stuff.  He had a tattoo of the state of Michigan on his arm.  (it was excellent). We struck up a delightful conversation and he bought our wood Michigan cutting board.  Meant to be.  #PureMichigan

Another couple stopped by.  They just purchased a home on our street and were looking for a table.  He is teaching at the Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.   It was nice to meet new neighbors.

A woman and her daughter stopped by.  They were so much fun; they chatted a bit and bought a couple of things, then came back for a fertilizer spreader.  In passing, they asked if we had dog crates. We stopped.  We had a dog crate, Allie's kennel.  We talked about and it decided not to sell it.   Intentionally had decided not to sell it.  We paused and looked at each other.

The daughter said, I have to get a new car for my dog.  He doesn't fit in my current car.

We knew.  Paul went down and got her kennel.  They measured.  I even suggested that they may want to look at other kennels.  Her kennel still had the airline stickers on it.  Maybe I wasn't ready.  But it was perfect for them.  I knew it would be.  It was meant to be.  I don't even know what we sold it for. Doesn't matter.  Allie would be proud that the kennel that shuffled her back and forth from Michigan to Cali and back again on planes, trains, and automobiles is out in the world again.   Home to another dog.

The best surprise of the day was Abby.  She came to visit with big hugs and kisses and gave me gifts to small twigs broken in half.  As she handed them to me, she kissed them goodbye and entrusted them to me.

She helped me sweep the floor.

The table and chairs are still available if you need a bistro table!

Overall it was a delightful experience.  Each time I let something go, I felt a little tug.  I don't keep a lot of junk, and what I do have is valuable to me because of the memories.  It felt good to find new homes for good things.  And we still have some drywall dust to clean up.

Friday love

We are so grateful for wonderful neighbors up north.  We really enjoy their company and are also happy just knowing that they are there if something goes wrong.

Sandi and her family recently adopted a beautiful dog, Bella.  I can't keep my eyes off her.  I had to take my camera to the beach and take her picture.

Bella is still getting used to the beach.  We loved watching her take her first swim ... just walked into the water and went for a swim.  It was just precious.

And then she walked over to Sandi and ...

Monday memories

When I think about memories, I think of two very specific people.  My Grandfather and my first GSD, Allie.  Yes, I consider her a person.

Paul would describe Allie as not a dog at all;  rather, she was a transcendental being sent to earth by aliens to observe life. She had a general disdain for dirt, mud, rain, and cold cement.  She did love the water, the beach, and surprisingly, the snow.  She really loved our sofa and our bed.

We loved her more than words could ever convey.  Her allergies scarred her body but never her spirit.  She loved Paul and tolerated me.  Oh sweet ironies, you don't pick dogs; they pick you.  We were grateful to have the time with her that we did.

Where ever she is now, she is definitely chasing seagulls, chewing on bones, and eating puppy treats. Our sweet girkie.

Gone to the dogs

I have had a nasty week - awful cold, cough, and headaches prevailed.  So very, very glad it's the weekend.   We have the Red Wings, a visit to our fave place Art of the Table, and friends over Saturday night.  Paul is making tenderloin deluxe.  It will be magnificent.

I love writing about my @thedogsamson.  He is our second furry love;  our first love, Allister, was a pretty spoiled little princess.  I wish I had been more of a photo addict when she was with us. She was a beautiful, wonderful German shepherd.

I also have realized, over time, how much I love taking pictures of dogs.

Sweet, very old Jake.
